John Mucklow was among the first appointees to a consultant post in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics in the National Health Service, at North Staffordshire Hospital Centre, Stoke-on-Trent (1979). He later became a senior lecturer at Keele University. His BPS contributions included membership of the BJCP Editorial Board (1984-90), the CPS Committee (1986-89, 2004-08) and the Joint Specialty Committee on CPT at RCP London (2003-07). He was architect of the website ‘CPD in CPT’, set up in 2003 to support continuing professional development among specialists in CPT with a commitment to the NHS. John retired from the NHS in 2007 to become Associate Medical Director of MRCP(UK), and take responsibility for the introduction of specialist examinations. He subsequently played a key role in the development of the Prescribing Safety Assessment. In 2015, he was awarded the Rang Prize for significant contribution to teaching in clinical pharmacology. He is now fully retired.
